Between July 2012 and May 2015, the Syracuse Police Department produced 484 Use of Force Reports, equivalent to one report per 2.5 officers annually. Forty-two percent (201 reports), indicated that the person was injured or required medical attention.
Of those against whom force was used, 62% were black, 29% were white, and 7% were Hispanic. Twenty percent were women, and 15% (72 reports) reported that the person against whom force was used displayed signs of having a mental health issue.
